Featured Playlist Poetry

This Valentine’s Day, we’ve been spreading the love with Playlist Poems! It’s been a blast creating love poems using song titles and some of our artist friends jumped on board!

Check out these featured love poems:

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Will You Be Their Valentine?

So, how many cards did you get? We stopped counting at around, oh, well a lot. You know, a really big number. Anyway – moving swiftly on – now Valentine’s Day is finally here we’ve got two amazing playlists to celebrate with. In the dimple-fuelled, carrot-cut trouser corner we have the mighty One Direction – a five-headed pop monster who destroy all pretenders on contact (and, it seems, know stuff about Greek mythology too). They’re making noise for singer-songwriter Cosmo Jarvis, Brit-rock ledge Eric Clapton, Jazz queen Etta James and our own, our very own, Adele, among others…

Meanwhile, in the ex-family band from the San Fernando Valley corner are the hamazing Haim – a sisterly trio who have reinvented super-slick 80s pop in their own image. They’re giving it up for Justin Timberlake, lip-curling knee-drop superstar Elvis Presley, bed-haired noise-pop brethren the Jesus and Mary Chain and Bob Dylan and a host of others…

The only question that remains is, who will you play it to? And when? The clock, as ever, is ticking…

The sounds of February courtesy of Sharemyplaylists.com

We present you the music selection that our friends from Sharemyplaylists have handpicked for this month.

25 songs inspired by Kraftwerk

Kraftwerk are currently playing their way through an eight-night residency at London’s Tate Modern, performing the albums, in full, that have gone on to prove so influential throughout pop music. SMP user Stef Galley has put together this mixtape, which gives 25 examples of artists influenced or inspired by Ralf Hütter and co – everyone from Felix Da Housecat, Kris Menace and Sub Focus to Pet Shop Boys, Electric Six and the Human League. A really well thought out playlist.

Ultimate Valentine’s Day Playlist

Valentine’s Day brings with it enough stress without having to worry about what music to play while you’re being all romantic and chivalrous and stuff. With that in mind, we’ve put our heads together and come up with a mixtape featuring 250 mood-setting songs: tracks by artists such as Omar, Teddy Pendergrass, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Barry White … Need we say anymore?

Anti Valentine’s Day Playlist

Valentine’s Day is, of course, not for everyone. We understand that. That’s why we’ve put together a playlist for all the single ladies and the gentleman flying solo, those unlucky in love and those not looking for love … Lily Allen, Kate Bush, the Smiths, N.W.A., Kraftwerk, Talking Hits, Johnny Cash, Billy Bragg and more feature here. They’ve all penned tunes that could dampen a romantic mood quicker than a Crazy Frog impersonation.

The Soundtrack to February 2013

Who’s up for some new music? “50 tracks to knock you out,” says Phil Wilce. “February’s punching well above its weight.” He recommends tunes by Toro Y Moi, Alex Metric, Bonobo and, particularly, B.J. Smith. We think you should also check out the brooding new Burial release, Claude VonStroke’s killer remix of Infinity Ink and the glorious return of Yo La Tengo, all featured here. Like a fine wine, The Soundtrack to just gets better with age.

Daft Punk Is Playing At My House

After years of rumour and speculation, it’s been announced Daft Punk WILL release new material – this year! Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel’s first studio album in eight years – their forth release – is due in May. SMP user Ditto Ramirez is celebrating the news with a mixtape of Daft Punk, Daft Punk-inspired and Daft Punk-sampled music: featuring, alongside the French duo, everyone from LCD Soundsystem to Gorillaz. Well-worth a listen.

Granola Rock

Chris Junkin is sick of it. He’s had enough of “looped drum beats” and “samples from 80’s hits.” In response to the homogeneous music which proliferates the charts, he’s created a mixtape “containing some of today’s – and yesterday’s – best natural sounding music.” Providing the “organic sound” is everyone from the National, Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver to Neil Young, the Band and Van Morrison. A must-hear playlist, this one.

One-hit Wonders

Ah, the one-hit wonder – music’s curiosities, the oddballs and misfits, the talent-squanderers and those who achieved far more than their talent warranted. This is a cracking collection of fleeting chart successes, created by SMP user kapotjeplov, which includes acts such Babylon Zoo, Ann Lee and House of Pain, China Crisis, Belinda Carlisle and Mel & Kim. The inclusion of the Verve, Echo and the Bunnymen and Edwyn Collins is more than a little unfair, but this is a solid playlist nonetheless.

Ultimate Piano House

If you’re looking for a little audio pick-me-up, why not check out our expertly put together – even if we do say ourselves – mixtape full of the very best in piano-led house from the late 80s and early 90s. Featured here, everyone from Inner City, Joe Smooth and Marshall Jefferson to K-Klass, Robin S and N-Trance. A proper feel-good collection of tracks. Play loud!

Future Tarantino Tracks?

“I like the way you make mixtapes, boy.” Our Django impression, there, directed at hoxsd1. He’s the SMP user behind this creation, “a collection of songs that sound like they could, some day, make their way into a Quentin Tarantino film.” From Count Five, Johnny Cash and the Herbaliser, to John Lee Hooker, the 13th Floor Elevators and the Pogues, you can imagine a Tarantino plot unfolding to all of these tunes. A great idea, well put together.

A Starter’s Guide to Noise Rock

Ah, nothing there’s nothing quite like a nice, mellow, undemanding mixtape: SMP user Slavoj Zizek’s A Starter’s Guide to Noise Rock, for example! Featuring the likes of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and the Birthday Party, this playlist is a superb introduction to the post-punk genre – one of a series offering a beginner’s guide to some of the more obscure musical sounds. See also: A Starter’s Guide to Instrumental Hip-Hop, Minimalism, Math Rock and others, on Zizek’s profile page.

What Sort of Valentine Will You Be?

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day – are you prepared?

St Valentine may well be the patron saint of over-sized pink padded card manufacturers and those people who place thin bunches of carnations outside petrol stations, but he knows a thing or two about music too. So if you’re in the mood to get someone else in the mood but you’re not sure how to do it, relax – we have it covered. We’ve gathered together a huge pile of new and exclusive playlists from The Saturdays, I Am Kloot, The Wanted, Deap Vally, Eliza Doolittle and a bunch of others. There isn’t a human being alive who’d remain unmoved by at least one of these, so why not try them all out and make sure you know exactly what your game-plan is for tomorrow…

The Saturdays offer up One Direction, Solange, Katy Perry…

The Wanted are all about Adele, Frank Ocean, Deep Purple (no, really)…

Eliza Doolitle recommends Amy Winehouse, Bill Withers, Al Green…

Gary Kemp loves David Bowie, Four Tops, Rolling Stones…

I Am Kloot suggest Aretha Franklin, Bon Iver, Frankie Goes To Hollywood…

Little Mix are playing Beyonce, Usher, Aerosmith…

Deap Vally nominate Neil Young, Lil Wayne, Booty Collins…

Pure Love have lined up Haim, Nick Cave, Jackson C. Frank…

OneRepublic demand Etta James, Marvin Gaye, Boyz II Men…

A Fine Frenzy fancies some Iron & Wine, Miles Davis, Feist…

The Good Natured like the look of Justin Timberlake, Crystal Castles, Depeche Mode…

Nina Nesbitt can’t get enough of Elton John, Jake Bugg, The Cure…

EMI Catalogue support Simple Minds, Phil Collins, Sinead O’Connor

#MusicMonday playlist brought to you by @MonaFims

Our friend @MonaFims has this #MusicMonday’s recommendations.

We start a new week with “Bad Habit”, a track from British Foals` brand new album “Holy Fire”, released today. We continue with a nice dose of German Indie electro-pop: Hamburg based “Wilhelm Tell Me” and a song from their debut album “Excuse My French” released back in 2011. “So Into You”.

We follow up with a song filled with beautiful boy/girl harmonies: “Indian Summer (Des Moines)” by an indie electronic band called “Canon Blue”, also known as Nashville’s Daniel James.

Next we have two favorite bands from Austria: First an indie pop band called “Francis International Airport” and their song “Monsters” and then “Life Was Young” from “Giantree”`s Debut album “We All Yell” released back in March 2012.

Last song in our playlist this week is the beautiful five minute long single “Ghosts” from “On An On”`s newly released debut album “Give In”.

If you have song suggestions for next week’s playlist, be sure to drop them in Mona’s Spotify Inbox.

Subscribe to the playlist and you will get a mix of twenty new Feel-Good tracks every Monday.
