Spotify – now with folders!

Playlists have always been central to the Spotify service and with the recent introduction of Spotify social we’ve seen millions of playlists be shared between friends and family. With millions of great playlists being created and shared we’ve looked to make it even easier for Spotify users to manage them with today’s introduction of playlist folders in this Spotify update.

To create a playlist folder, simply go to the File -> New playlist folder or click the “+” symbol near the top left side of your screen. Once you’ve created a folder you can just drag and drop existing playlists into it and even create folders within folders to better organise your music.

Alongside playlist folders – which up till now has been one of our users’ most requested features – we’re also introducing a number of other cool new features in this latest update, including:

  • Official Spotify Twitter updates will appear for all users in the Feed to keep you up-to-date on all the latest Spotify and music news
  • A new look and feel for the Search view. Artist and album images are shown to make the search view more visually arresting
  • Newly-added picture of playlist subscribers to the header of each playlist, so users can see at a glance who’s subscribed.
  • Support for Windows 7 Snap, Jump list and Taskbar features
  • Added “Send to Windows Live” option

We’ll begin rolling out the new version to users today, you’ll be automatically updated once we are able to update more users. We really hope you love the new features as much as we do!

  1. Sounds great, but I have 3 questions for Spotify/anyone else:
    1) Will we be able to do Spotify-Itunes music “trading”, not just importing itunes into spotify?
    2) Will we be able to/can we send playlists to people on Spotify Social, not just songs/albums?
3)Do we HAVE to re-download Spotify to get the new update?

Hope my questions can be answered!

  2. hello all,

could someone so kindly send me a spotify invitation?
I live in holland and I have a free spotify account. Apparently, at the present moment no one can subscribe for a free account without an invitation.
i want to invite a friend of mine but I am not allowed unless I have an invitation myself (wich would apparently give me an “invitation token”). Could someone so kindly send me an invitation so that I can invite my friend as well?
    Thanks a lot
    Cheers everyone 🙂

  3. Sounds excellent. Just looking forward to having a history of songs I’ve played. I’d find that extremely useful. Come on Spotify! Good job so far! Keep it up!

  4. It would be really nice if there was the option to add new play lists to the top of the play lists, or drag and drop where you’d like that album (when adding a new album to the playlist list, which would usually be at the top). You have to drag it all the way from the bottom to the top of the play lists. Anyone found a way around this?

  5. Right, so this took you three years to realize, I bet? How about an OUTBOX folder and SORTING PLAYLISTS ALPHABETICALLY. Those must be two of the most d*mn basic, most unchallenging programming tasks ever. Wake me up when you’ve found a programmer capable, I’m going into hibernation.

  6. Woah!! You are right Atthack, it seems they released another update and forgot to tell us about it!? Or maybe they were too embarrassed…? Anyway the minimizing works now, *phew*!

  7. This is something I’m waiting for a long time.
@natts is right: labels would be even more brilliant, because it allows playlists to co-exist in more than one folder. But, that would probably break the ability to put folders in folders. That’s a feature I don’t use (yet), but I bet others do.
@bouncefm: don’t be so negative. If you can do better: write something better. An Outbox would be cool, because I sometimes wonder: did I already send that file? Alphabetically sorted playlists would suck like hell. I usally do NOT want them to be sorted alphabetically.

  8. Snälla, fixa scrobbling till också. Borde vara relativt enkelt programmatiskt.

  9. Good, but could use some improvements. For example, you can’t delete songs directly from the folder, have to find it in the respective playlist. This becomes annoying if playing through songs using the “play” feature on the folder itself. This means you can’t remove played songs without having to search for them individually in whatever playlist they’re in.

  10. I hope folders will be availabe on phone apps asap since now that I have organized my playlists in folders on the computer it’s quite a mess on my phone… :/ Otherwise, great update I’ve been awaiting it for a long time now! (Y)

  11. Please add an option to remove/hide the picture(s) of the subscriber(s).
I don’t need to see all people all of the time.
