Spotify introduces music to your social life

Today, September the 22nd, is a big day for everyone who loves music.

Music is one of the most social things there is. That’s why for the past couple of years, we’ve been obsessed with what the next generation music service should look like.

We knew that the service had to be free to draw people away from piracy. Helping them to listen to even more music. To do that, we also knew that the service would have to be inherently social. There couldn’t be a better place to do this than Facebook.

We’re very excited to have been asked by Mark Zuckerberg to showcase this new experience at the f8 conference in San Francisco today. Take a look at these amazing new features in our video.

You’ll now start seeing new music posts and play buttons all over your newsfeeds. Hit a play button and the music starts. Right there. Spotify fires up to give you a new soundtrack to your social life. Check out your new Music Dashboard and your real-time ticker to discover the music that’s trending with your friends.

This integration with Facebook will help everyone to discover more free music than ever before. Thanks to our unrivalled, truly free service, users can just hit play to enjoy the music, no hassle, no gimmicks; month after month after month.

We hope many more people can enjoy the musical journeys that this integration will bring. Like the thrill of looking through a friend’s music collection and finding a track that blows your mind. Or sending birthday playlists across the planet.

Having free access to music on Facebook also gives us an opportunity to express ourselves in a new way. We’re proud to share pictures of our lives. Now we can say something about ourselves through music. “Hi I’m Daniel – here’s some Daft Punk.”

We know that Spotify’s users who connect to Facebook listen to more music on a weekly basis. They listen to a wider variety of music – in fact we have more than 400 million playlists created in Spotify now. Because these users are more social, they’re more engaged. Because they’re more engaged, they’re more than twice as likely to pay for music.

Social discovery on Facebook means that we’re bringing people back to paying for music again. And that‘s how the brilliant artists who create this music can continue creating it for us to enjoy.

Enjoy the soundtrack to your social life!

New Releases – August 2011

Each and every month we’re creating a playlist dedicated to the very latest Spotify releases. Updated weekly – or any other time we discover tracks we think you’ll like – this is the best place to check out the best new music around. Currently ready and waiting for you on this month’s edition are tracks from Blink 182, Ed Sheeran, Among Brothers, Yuck; a killer Serban Ghenea remix of Björk’s Cosmogony and the new, incredible Balearic-indebted release from Paul Weller.

The Soundtrack to July 2011

The beginning of the month is always a particularly exciting time here at SMP Towers, as our favourite monthly mixtapes make their way from your brains to our hompage. The granddaddy of all of our regular playlists is The Soundtrack to…, by Phil Wilce. The best of a brilliant collection of new music, as far as we’re concerned, comes in the shape of Maverick Sabre, The Horrors, The Chemical Brothers, Toddla T, Sbtrkt and Tom Vek.

August 2011 – Acid Jazz Hispano

The Acid Jazz Hispano series seems to get better and better each month, turning in the coolest cuts of funky, jazzy, soulful, housey, hip-hop beats. This month is no exception. Featured here: Mark Ronson feat. Kasabian, Los Amigos Invisibles, Prince, Roy Ayers… need we go on? We will anyway: Gladys Knight & The Pips, Marvin Gaye, Alabama 3, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Joe Smooth, Amy Winehouse and tons more. If you only listen to one playlist today – don’t, listen to loads! – make it this one.

Crystal Fighters and Ghostpoet perform at the Spotify Studio @ The Big Chill

Just over a week has passed since the Big Chill Festival and we hope you all had a great time – we sure did! In case you missed the festival or if your memory of it is slightly blurry we’ve compiled videos with some of the great artists who performed to jolt your memory…

One of the bands that popped in were Crystal Fighters who were nice enough to sing their song “Follow”.

Ghostpoet also stopped by to sing us “Survive it” – great stuff!

Also, check out interviews with the bands below. Enjoy!

CSS La Liberacion – Exclusive Pre-Release for Spotify Premium

Close your eyes and imagine for a moment that you’re at a festival. What do you see around you? Badly constructed tents caked with mud, greedy mits spilling-over with goblets of pear cider, flustered looking dinner ladies serving what’s purporting to be a lamb burger. Check, check, check. But something’s missing.

And that thing is CSS. Yes the five headed, Sao Paulo art-pop masters embodied the joyful, free spirit of festivals ever since their 2006 debut. Armed with day-glo cat-suits, judicious amounts of glitter and two albums (Cansei der Ser Sexy and 2008’s Donkey) that were filled with such four-to-the-floor bounders like Move, Alala and of course Let’s Make Love And Listen Death From Above.

Luckily the band are officially back with their third offering La Liberacion available to listen to now exclusively for Spotify Premium users. The full-length album, the band’s third, is a true melding of their debut’s riotous anarchy and Donkeys grungey maturity. This single is bubbling over with some serious pop nouse, something the band have always had in bucketloads but now feel newly empowered to express it fully and freely.

Lovefoxxx attributes their new zest for songwriting to being relaxed and at home “Being in São Paulo helped a whole lot. I don’t like being a foreigner for too long. I was in love with my life. Feeling energetic. I was feeling inspired and happy.”

Check the album out here and tell us what you think of it to be in with a chance to see the band perform live in the UK plus some new merch.

Introducing Bikini – free download of their EP for all Spotify users

Bikini is an electronic collective from British Columbia, now dispersed across North America. In the wake of their 2010 EP RIPJDS, band members converged from four points of the continent to write and direct their first music video, prep their live show and tour it in select cities. The year culminated with an unforgettable night at the Austin Museum of Art at SXSW, which ended a year of logistical pangs with a old fashioned band brawl. With renewed focus, Bikini’s Aaron Aujla and Kieran Magzul are working on a new LP to be released later this year. To date, the tracks have been built between Aujla’s New York City studio and the forests of northern British Columbia where Magzul treeplants. The yet to be titled LP is set to be finalized later this summer and should be released for the end of 2011.

Make sure to head over here where Spotify users can download Bikini’s RIPJDS EP (6 original tracks) + 5 remixes, as well as a bonus remixes from Grimes, and a exclusive, unreleased track, called “End of Mars.” Naturally, you can also stream the EP through Spotify here.
