The sun is out, the weather is warm, and it’s time to find the perfect song to pair with that umbrella in your drink. Every year as summer rolls around, the Spotify music editorial team scours all the hottest new tracks to determine which will dominate your speakers as the quintessential Songs of Summer. So apply your sunscreen, grab those shades, and get ready for our global Songs of Summer predictions for 2022.

Again this year, the songs that speak to long hazy summer days, beach trips, and cool drinks span many genres—hip-hop, Latin, pop, country, indie, dance, and more—as well as moods, so there’s a song for every moment.

As you’re planning the next summer soiree, might we suggest adding “As It Was” by Harry Styles and Big Energy by Latto to your queue? Or cranking up Ojitos Lindos” by Bad Bunny (feat. Bomba Estéreo) when you’re hanging poolside? How about pressing play on Post Malone and Doja Cat‘s new track “I Like You (A Happier Song)” as you kick off your vacation road trip?

And there’s more where those came from. Without further ado, Spotify’s Songs of Summer 2022 predictions, in alphabetical order:

To determine this list of songs, which we predict will be on repeat over the next three months, our curation teams pay attention to a number of factors, including the track’s current trajectory and cultural impact, combined with forecasting based on prior years’ knowledge of what tends to pop throughout the summer. But we also took this moment to see what other summer trends are emerging as people start to enjoy more fun in the sun.

The temperature is rising on these summer trends

Summer is a time to shed layers and get out in the sun—we all know about 2019’s viral “hot girl summer” moment. Now, there are nearly 170,000 “hot girl summer” user-generated playlists on Spotify worldwide. And this year, we’re already seeing new seasonal themes emerge.

User-generated “feral girl summer” playlists have surged more than 320% in the past three months.  Some of the top-added songs include “Psycho” by Maisie Peters, “Get Into It (Yuh)” by Doja Cat, “Thot Shit” by Megan Thee Stallion, “I Did Something Bad” by Taylor Swift, “Promiscuous” by Nelly Furtado (feat. Timbaland), and “Act Up” by City Girls.

Searches for “coconut girl summer” have surged nearly 950% this year, with top-added songs for these playlists including “Island in the Sun” by Weezer, “Diet Mountain Dew” by Lana Del Rey, “Santeria” by Sublime, “Malibu” by Miley Cyrus, and “Could You Be Loved” by Bob Marley & The Wailers

The “coastal grandmother” trend is buzzing on Spotify as well—average daily plays of related playlists have skyrocketed nearly 5,000% over the last month!

And when it comes to the drink of summer, some fans think that Dirty Shirleys are in. That seems to be true on Spotify—”dirty shirley” user-generated playlists saw nearly a 95% spike in average daily plays over the past month.

Broadway’s Broadening Appeal

There’s a certain magic involved with attending a Broadway show—whether it be a Rodgers and Hammerstein revival, or a brand-new production from Anaïs Mitchell. And now, due to streaming, fans can experience that Broadway magic from the comfort of their headphones.

In fact, as streaming on Spotify has become more widespread, there’s also been an increase in streaming of the Broadway genre. From 2012 to 2018, we’ve seen an 81% surge. People are taking to Spotify to prep themselves for highly anticipated shows, re-live their favorites, or experience musicals they might not have gotten a chance to see.

Additionally, showtunes listeners complete Broadway albums in the prescribed song order at 124% higher a rate than that of people who complete non-soundtrack albums. There’s truly something to be said about experiencing a musical’s story the way the writers and composers intended.

In honor of the 73rd Tony Awards this past weekend, we looked into streaming of musicals over the last 90 days to see which performances have that everlasting Broadway magic.

‘Eurovision’ Winners Past and Future, As Told by Your Streams

There’s nothing quite like Eurovision. What other TV music competition has featured Russian grandmothers who sing while baking, Finnish monsters jamming out a “Hard Rock Hallelujah,” or a hip-thrusting saxophone player from Moldova? The European song contest can hardly be compared even to itself in any given year—except in terms of streaming. In the run-up to this weekend’s final performances, fans around the world are already playing their favorite competitors’ song. Could these streams point to the country that will be the 2019 champion?

Eurovision is the world’s longest-running annual television contest, and at 186 million viewers in 2018, it often charts as the world’s biggest live-music event. Over the course of the competition, Eurovision brings musicians from upwards of 50 countries (mostly from Europe) together for a colorful, energy-filled celebration of diversity and unity.

With 41 countries competing this year, and a song time limit to three minutes, it’s crucial that your performance stands out. This could explain why one song often combines several elements. Mix a power ballad intro, rhythms particular to the country of origin, and a crowd-pleasing pop chorus with acrobatic dance and you’ve got yourself a Eurovision Cocktail.

In the weeks leading up to the highly televised final, each country presents its respective artist and song. So ahead of the final performances, we took a look at which country’s nominees are being streamed the most:

  1.     Italy – Mahmood, “Soldi
  2.     Sweden – John Lundvik, “Too Late for Love
  3.     Netherlands – Duncan Laurence, “Arcade
  4.     France – Bilal Hassani, “Roi
  5.     Spain – Miki NúñezLa Venda
  6.     Norway – Keiino, “Spirit in the Sky
  7.     Switzerland – Luca Hänni, “She Got Me
  8.     Cyprus – Tamta, “Replay
  9.     Estonia – Victor Crone, “Storm
  10.     Denmark – Leonora, “Love Is Forever

When broken down by each participating country, it’s not surprising that most listeners favor their nation’s own nominated song and artist. Yet listeners in Romania, Lithuania, Austria, Poland, Malta, Ireland, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Luxembourg, and Germany have all been streaming Italy’s “Soldi.” At least in terms of streaming, Italian singer-songwriter Mahmood is the clear favorite.

Of course, what’s Eurovision without a little nostalgia? Below are the 10 top-streamed Eurovision winners of all time.

  1.     1974 – ABBA (Sweden) – “Waterloo
  2.     2018 – Netta (Israel) – “Toy
  3.     2015 – Måns Zelmerlöw (Sweden) – “Heroes
  4.     2012 – Loreen (Sweden) – “Euphoria
  5.     2010 Lena (Germany) – “Satellite
  6.     2009 Alexander Rybak (Norway) – “Fairytale
  7.     1965 France Gall (Luxembourg) – “Poupée de cire, poupée de son
  8.     2017 Salvador Sobral (Portugal) – “Amar pelos Dois
  9.     1995 Petter Skavland, Rolf Løvland, Secret Garden (Norway) – “Nocturne
  10.     1987 Johnny Logan (Ireland) – “Hold Me Now

Which Movies’ Music Strikes More of a Chord?

Two of the biggest box office hits this year were about music: the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born, which featured new, original tunes by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Both films have been nominated for several Academy Awards®, but which movie’s soundtrack struck more of a chord with audiences after the credits rolled? Even though Bohemian Rhapsody isn’t up for an award in the music categories, just for fun we checked our streaming data to find out.

We also looked at the streaming totals to speculate the winners in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories. The nominees for the best soundtrack are Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Street Could Talk, Isle of Dogs, and Mary Poppins Returns. For the top tune, the nominees are “Shallow,” from A Star is Born, “All the Stars,” from Black Panther, “I’ll Fight,” from RBG, “The Place Where Lost Things Go,” from Mary Poppins Returns, and “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings,” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Check out who our data suggests will take home the statue in these two categories—and the streaming numbers—in the infographic below.

Tune in to the 91st Academy Awards ceremony Sunday, February 24, at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.
