Introducing Spotify for Brands Video Ads

Brands_SponsoredSession

The world is listening…and now, watching.

Spotify for Brands, Spotify’s marketing platform, is launching two new video ad experiences that will now be seen around the world by our 30 million-plus free user base: Sponsored Sessions and Video Takeover. Watch this video to see how they work.

Spotify Free users can watch a brand-sponsored video spot (aka a Sponsored Session) in exchange for 30 minutes of uninterrupted music. Brands can also sponsor a video ad break on desktop with a Video Takeover. Both formats are delivered in a 100% viewable environment and give our brand partners 100% share of voice.

“Our audience is incredibly engaged so we are delivering an advertising experience that enhances their time spent on Spotify and connects them to the music and brands they love,” says Jeff Levick, Spotify’s Chief Business Officer.

Spotify for Brands’ partners for these new formats include Coca-Cola, Ford, McDonalds, NBC Universal Pictures, Target and Wells Fargo. They’ll reach a highly engaged audience that spends an average 146 minutes a day listening, dancing or singing along to Spotify across multiple devices.*

“These new video ad units give us the opportunity to be a small part of people’s everyday passion for music and create better experiences across Spotify,” says Ivan Pollard, Senior Vice President of Connections at The Coca-Cola Company. “Spotify are great partners in helping us execute new ways of connecting with people on their platform leveraging data, intelligence and creativity to bring a little refreshment to an already uplifting experience with music.”

Video ads will be available beginning in October in United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain and Sweden, and are coming to additional markets in 2015.

The Winners of Your Music Moments!

Your Music Moments

Today, we’re excited to reveal the tracks music fans voted for as the ultimate tunes to get a party started, survive a hangover, get through a Monday, endure a long journey and mend a broken heart, along with the guiltiest pleasure and favourite one hit wonder.

Our inaugural Your Music Moments poll was voted for by more than 30,000 Spotify users across the globe, revealing the tunes that provide the soundtrack to music fans’ lives.

hangOur Guilty Pleasure floor-filler crown goes to Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’. Journey’s classic received more than double the votes than Britney or The Backstreet Boys tracks got, making it Spotify’s ultimate ‘Guilty Pleasure’.

partyIn the hotly contended category of top ‘Party Starter’, Avicii and Robin Thicke, who received more votes than classic tracks from the Bee Gees and Chic, were neck and neck throughout the voting with Avicii’s Levels sneaking in at the last minute win to be named the top ‘Party Starter’.

guiltyTo help with the morning after the night before, music lovers voted to ease their sore heads by listening to The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars, which was voted ‘Best Hangover’ track, beating Avicii’s Wake Me Up and Stronger by Kanye West.

exFor broken hearts, music fans opted to drown their sorrows to Adele’s Someone Like You, rather than the blatant We Are Never Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift. Adele’s Grammy-winning track was voted the best song to ‘Get Over An Ex’.

workoutThe music-loving, gym go-ers chose the motivational eighties classic Eye Of The Tiger, to feel the burn to, over recent floor-fillers such as LMFAO’s Sexy And I Know It or Snoop Dogg’s aptly named track Sweat.

It’s so great to see the mix of cult classics and current chart-toppers that made the cut for our very first Your Music Moments – explore all this year’s winners here!

  • Best Driving Song: Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
  • Hangover Cure: The Lazy Song – Bruno Mars
  • Guilty Pleasure: Don’t Stop Believin’ – Journey
  • Get Over An Ex: Someone Like You – Adele
  • Party Starter: Levels – Avicii
  • Workout Song: Eye Of The Tiger – Rocky OST
  • One Hit Wonder: Ice Ice Baby – Vanilla Ice
  • Best Monday Song: Manic Monday – The Bangles

Spotify 0.3.23 – Related Artists

We’re in the process of releasing an update to Spotify, version 0.3.23. We’ve made some minor bug fixes and added password protection to download purchases which you can modify in the preferences menu.

The other main change with this release is the addition of a ‘Related artists’ tab to the artist view.

This feature is pretty exciting for us as it’s the first time we’ve used our own data to power recommendations. Previously we’ve used genre and artist tagging from AllMusic for related artists which worked well, but did not cover a large portion of our catalogue. What we’ve done now is to go through months and months of listening data and look closely at what people listen to.

This allows us to see that users who listen to a lot of The Rolling Stones, for example, are also big fans of Iggy Pop or The Byrds. The new feature pulls some of this information together to show you a range of related artists in one tab.

The ‘Related artist’ tab is the first of many uses for this data and we hope you’ll be able to find some great new bands you might not have otherwise heard of.
