Violent Soho announce Australian Tour – proudly presented by Spotify!

Violent Soho

“We sit around on couches, buying what we think makes us who we are, like a hungry ghost”, it was these words from Kalle Lasn’s book ‘Culture Jam’ that resonated with Violent Soho’s Luke Boerdam and acted as a major influence on him while penning the Mansfield (4122) band’s highly acclaimed third record, Hungry Ghost, which has subsequently lead to ‘Soho’ (as their loyal fans refer to them as) enjoying a whirlwind of success over the last nine months. Today we’re very psyched to announce that rather than slowing down, Violent Soho will be heading out on their biggest national tour to date this July and taking Melbourne’s ‘The Smith Street Band’ with them as special guest supports – a tour that promises to wow crowds all over the country and have kids jumping from everything in sight.

Spotify launches Emerge in Australia & New Zealand to surface best new music

Spotify, in collaboration with our mates at HP, has launched its Emerge program in an Australia and New Zealand first, putting the spotlight on upcoming local artists.

Emerge uses technology to offer a unique insight into what could be the next big thing in music, by using Spotify’s vast array of data to pinpoint ten emerging artists from the region, based on their vitality (increase in streams and shares week on week). It is then put in your hands – through listening, liking, voting, and sharing – to determine who should win.

The ten bands vying for Emerge supremacy are The Aston Shuffle (AU), MT (AU), Tom Lark (NZ), Gang of Youths (AU), Max & Bianca (AU), Miracle (AU), Gossling (AU), Chance Waters (AU), The Acid (AU), Smashproof (NZ). They’ll join a prestigious list of past bands to be involved in past Emerge programs overseas, including Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Bastille, alt-j and Lorde.

Head to to find out more about the bands and VOTE for who you think should be the next Emerge victor.

Ball Park Music announce new single, album and Australian tour- proudly presented by Spotify!

Ball Park Music

It is said that all good things come in threes and today Ball Park Music made a triple announcement that is guaranteed to excite their fans: a new single “She Only Loves Me When I’m There”, a National album tour, and the release date for their third album ‘Puddinghead’.

‘Puddinghead’ will be released on Friday 4th April 2014 via Stop Start and Intertia. This new record is the follow up to their 2012 sophomore release, ‘Museum’.

Unlike the band’s first two albums, which were penned and recorded in between a relentless touring schedule, 2013 provided the first opportunity for the band to write and record in a controlled environment. The result is ‘Puddinghead’, the band’s third album in 24 months, and without doubt their most accomplished to date.

They say the word “puddinghead” is a Shakespearean insult offered to “someone who manages to mess up even the most basic tasks…”

Determined to leave their own print, Ball Park Music opted to self-produce and take the recording of ‘Puddinghead’ into their own hands. Renting a dirt-cheap property in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, they endured the overwhelming heat of their 70s fibro shack, scooped the mud from the doorway, smashed in the broken door, cleaned away the rotten food and insects and recorded to the sweet backdrop of leaky taps, magpies and main roads. It was far from the comforts of a professional recording studio, but somehow it worked.

The first taste of the band’s new material is the lead single “She Only Loves Me When I’m There”. It’s also the opening track on the record and sets the tone for an album that celebrates their underdog leanings and rejoices in the love, loss and banalities of suburban Australian life. The track and album was mixed by Grammy nominated Tony Hoffer (Beck, The Kooks, Phoenix, Air, and M83).

This new and exciting chapter for Ball Park Music comes off the back of an incredible three years that’s seen them secure two J Award album nominations for previous albums ‘Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs’ and ‘Museum’, a top 10 ARIA debut for ‘Museum’, numerous sold out headline tours alongside becoming one of Australia’s most loved festival bands via performances at Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival, Southbound, Homebake and Big Day Out.

To celebrate the release of ‘Puddinghead’, Ball Park Music is hitting the road for a national tour. The tour will be supported by triple j and Spotify and they will be joined by special guests Papa vs Pretty, Holy Holy (NSW, ACT, QLD, VIC) and Jesse Davidson (TAS, WA, NT, SA).

Our Interview with Warpaint

When you think of Los Angeles, generally images of beaches, bikini’s, and the Hollywood elite come to mind.  Warpaint are the antidote to all of this. Based in LA, Warpaint are a unique force of four, delivering the deep, dark and mesmerizing sounds of swampy bass and ethereal vocal hooks. Having been on tour since their critically acclaimed debut album ‘ The Fool‘, Warpaint have returned this year with their self titled follow up. In writing and recording the album, members Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman, Jenny Lee Lindberg and Stella Mozgawa, rented a house up in desert oasis of Joshua Tree National Park. There they continually jammed, which happened to result in a visit from the police as local residents had complained that music was making them nauseous. Of course, the offending (or brilliantly woozy) song, Disco // Very is on the album.

We had a quick chat with bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg about their influences and the what makes their music tick.

What music was playing in the house when you were growing up?

When I was a youngen’ there was a lot of Hall and Oates, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul, Madonna, lots of pop, and old school r&b/soul…
What was the first record you fell in love with?
The Cure ‘Staring At The Sea ‘.. it was the first album I loved absolutely every song..
Who made you want to make music?
Not any person really..I loved the feeling I felt whilst listening to music. I wanted to make music that made me feel like that!!
It was an experiment really,  and i fell instantly in love. The passion and inspiration that came along with writing music was like nothing I had ever experienced.
What were you listening to whilst recording?
Lots of us!!! hahaha. My ears were pretty spent at that point, anytime I could listen to nothing, I would relish in those moments..
What five records couldn’t you live without? hmmmmm.. off the top o my head..
epeche Mode ‘Violator’, Brian Eno ‘Another Green World’, Siouxie and the Banshees ‘Ju Ju’, Fleetwood Mac ‘Dreams’, and…. the best of The Beegees!!!  Also, my favorite are mix tapes made by friends, I love a collection of everything.
What are you listening to at the moment?
This internet radio station called Soma, its basically ambient noise, and is on a heavy rotation at my house everyday.

Does the perfect song exist?

Disco meets hardcore meets melody and harmony with some drone in there? S
omething with all of those ingredients and I think you would have a pretty damn good song!!!!
Finally, what’s your favourite noise?
I have always loved the sound of water running through a faucet. There’s something very soothing and noisey about it!! It sounds really good recorded as well!!!

Pigeon announce ‘Settle In’ EP Tour – proudly presented by Spotify!

Positively charged with a thrilling electro‐pop sound, Pigeon have evolved their latest offering, melding together sexy brass, raw piano, electric bass and anethemic velvety vocals, to form their sophomore EP, ‘Settle In’, due out 24th January 2014.

Hailing from Brisbane, the first single off the EP, ‘Curtain Call’ has won this five‐piece acclaim from the discerning taste afficionados at Triple J, Indie Shuffle, Earmilk and more, while the intricate layering in the second single, ‘Two Moon Love’ has garnered them over 22,000 Soundcloud plays in under a month as well as charting on Hype Machine.

Tastefully blending a unique cocktail of European electronica with nods to the likes of Sebastien Tellier and Royksopp, with the distinctly homebrew throwback to an era dominated by Cut Copy and The Presets, Pigeon have merged continents to create a truly unique sound.

The virality of their intelligently crafted Daft Punk medley coupled with the success of The Kite String Tangle (frontman Danny Harley’s solo project) has propelled them onto the stages of Australia’s most notable festivals including Splendour In The Grass, Parklife, BigSound, Fat As Butter and Peats Ridge.

Completely self produced, mixed, mastered and recorded, Pigeon have harnessed the sunshine of their northern state with a European flair, bringing the best of both worlds to a dancefloor near you.
