Songs for the Conclave

Very soon the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church from around the world will gather in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican to choose the next Pope and spiritual leader of over 1 billion Catholics.

Before the results are broadcast to the world via smoke signal, we wanted to present a special conclave themed playlist to celebrate this rare, historic occasion. We’ve partnered with Tim O’Malley, Director, Notre Dame Center for Liturgy and Concurrent Professor, Department of Theology; and Carolyn Pirtle, Assistant Director, Notre Dame Center for Liturgy to create a playlist of hymns and choral music from the Spotify catalog.

Dr. O’Malley gave us his interpretation of the music selection:

“The playlist consists of motifs central to the Catholic imagination relative to the election of a Pope. It focuses upon certain themes, including the Church’s asking for guidance from the Holy Spirit during this time of transition; the Church’s crying out to God for mercy that we might be found worthy to receive a successor of Peter, who unites the Church in love; and praise for the God, who guides the Church through the twists and turns of history. The playlist is intended to give the listener a disposition of wonder, of contemplation, of prayer to the God who first loved us.”

#MusicMonday playlist brought to you by @MonaFims

Our friend @MonaFims has this #MusicMonday’s recommendations.

We start with the song “Skyscraper” from a new favorite London-based dream-pop duo called “Elephant” (also know as Amelia Rivas and Christian Pinchbeck). We continue with yet another London-based band. A quartet called “Post War Years” and their song “Glass House”. I’m looking forward to check out their new album “Galapagos” set to be released next Monday.

We have an American indie rock duo next, “Generationals”, consisting of Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer. The song “Trust” is from an EP they released back in 2010. Then time for a slice of indie-pop from the Australian duo “High Highs”. (Jack Milas and Oli Chang) “Open Season” is from their debut LP released in 2011.

“The Dig” is an indie rock band based in New York City. “All Tied” is from the band’s most recent album, Midnight Flowers, released in 2012.

Last song in our playlist this week is “Bellio” by the English “Dutch Uncles”.
