Drowned in September

Another month, another fine selection of playlists from the UK’s original music blog and social network, DrownedinSound…

Drowned in September 2010

September saw the sun set on a summer of festivals (all of our coverage is compiled here) and the twilight of 2k10 begin. Over at http://drownedinsound.com we’ve been getting dewy-eyed, looking back at the 10 years since our website tumbled onto the internet. This has included a week dedicated to dubstep (one of the most inventive and pioneering underground music movements of the past decade), we’ve encouraged 50 of our favourite people to reveal one of their favourite records in our Favourite 50 (available as a playlist here), plus we’ve had days dedicated to acts we’ve loved and lost like Arab Strap and Grammatics.

All the while Sept bought with it the rain of literally hundreds of great records, including new albums from DiS-favourites Weezer, Interpol and Blonde Redhead. That’s not to mention the launch of Ping (thoughts?), The Mercury Music prize and DrownedinSound’s alternative Mercury prize: The Neptune Music Prize. Busy doesn’t come close but hopefully this playlist provides a digestible short-cut into what a fantastic month September has been in our world.

Mark Ronson’s new album and interactive app

Mark Ronson is back and this time more than ever, he means business – the Business Intl, in fact.

Record Collection‘ is the third album headed up by the mid-Atlantic muso mastermind and, as usual, he’s bought a host of famous friends and former collaborators along for the ride. The follow up to 2007’s triple platinum ‘Version’ – which sold one million copies in the UK and saw Ronson score the Best Male Solo Artist gong at the Brit Awards – is every bit as impressive as it’s predecessor.

Starting today Spotify Premium listeners can enjoy a special five-track preview of ‘Record Collection‘ before its wide release on September 27th.

Along with the album today we have a super cool interactive app built by the good people over at MXP4. The app lets fans to play with three Ronson tracks – Bang Bang Bang, The Bike Song, and Somebody To Love Me, in a game-like fashion. The individual elements of each song can be turned on and off as each track plays, allowing you to create your own unique versions of the songs. Enjoy!

Spotify Premium – hear Linkin Park’s new album first

World-dominating rockers Linkin Park release their ground breaking fourth album ‘A Thousand Suns’ next week, but we’re giving Premium users a chance to hear the album in advance over the weekend.

A Thousand Suns addresses various issues close to the band’s heart, from the recession to the conflicts in the Middle East, and is produced by legendary producer/guru Rick Rubin in collaboration with Mike Shinoda.

Lead vocalist Chester Bennington explains: “We’re not just making an album. The experiments that resulted filled the studio hard drive with diverse, abstract sounds, amorphous echoes, cacophonous samples, and handmade staccato merged into wandering, elusive melody. Each track felt like a hallucination.”

He continues: “We wanted to make a record that felt conceptual, a record that felt like as a whole that it told a story, a story that was very powerful and thoughtful. The album has some kind of feeling of that the entire album takes you on a journey and leads you down this path that is very visual and very emotionally charged.”

Enjoy!
