The Soundtrack to May 2011

We hit the ground running with the biggest of mixtape monthlies, The Soundtrack to… May’s edition is a suitably joyous symphony of eclecticism: there’s the devastatingly ace Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair from Arctic Monkeys; the long overdue return of Tom Vek on the infectious A Chore; the only British MC you need in your life, Ghostpoet with Survive It; and the singer-songwriter everyone’s talking about, Ed Sheeran on The A Team. All these and more await you in the best monthly round-up of fresh music you’ll find anywhere on the web.

New Releases – June 2011

Allow us to introduce to you our brand new, er ,New Releases playlist. You know that half-proselytizing, half-misanthropic blog post we do, Singles Club? Yeah you do, it’s the one where we say stuff about how listening to Jennifer Lopez makes you question whether we are "the lowest ebb in human history." Yeah, well that. You can listen to all the tracks we review on that, as well as the very best new release on Spotify, each and every month by clicking here. Don’t forget to subscribe!

Busy P Presents…

Ed Banger records got joined SMP this month, bringing with them a smorgasbord of mixtapes from their incredible roster of DJs and producers. This one’s from their head honcho, the top boy, the main man, Busy P. Not only is Pedro Winter an incendiary DJ in his own right, in Daft Punk he managed arguably the biggest dance music act of all time for over ten years – shifting six millions albums in the process – and, amazingly, he’s still only 34 years old. Including a handful of his own productions, his mixtape also features Metronomy, Panda Bear, The Strokes, James Blake and more.

Spotify exclusive – Foster The People debut album

LA-based three piece Foster The People will release their debut album ‘Torches’ on 27th June but Spotify users can stream it now!

Already causing a storm in the U.S. where the band attracted huge crowds at this year’s SXSW Festival and Coachella, ‘Torches’ looks set to soundtrack the summer ahead and beyond with its glistening pop choruses, hypnotic synths and hook-laden melodies.

From the funk-bass grove of ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ complete with an instantly catchy, hum-along chorus to the slow-building, epic closer ‘Warrant,’ it’s easy to see why Foster The People have already garnered a huge amount of critical acclaim and public adoration in the U.S.

With production from Paul Epworth (Florence & The Machine/Friendly Fires), Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen) and Rich Costey (Muse) and with influences and inspirations ranging from The Beach Boys to New Order, the bustling ‘Life On The Nickel’ and album opener ‘Helena Beat’ showcase the bands knack of twisting a glorious melody around a funky synth line and thunderous drums.

The band will be playing the following UK festivals this summer:
Sunday 26th June – Glastonbury Festival (John Peel Stage)
Saturday 16th July – Lovebox Festival
Sunday 17th July – Latitude Festival

Domino Radio is on the air

In the spirit of such stand-alone broadcasting giants as Radio Caroline, The Peel Show, Rinse FM, The World Service and Woman’s Hour – and dispensing with such orthodoxies as play lists and compliance – Domino Radio commences transmission on June 6th 2011 – for one week only – featuring non-stop twenty four hour music, conversation and good times.

Presented by Domino’s international roster of artists, along with friends and neighbours from the worldwide independent music community, Domino Radio will host a dynamic schedule loaded with individuality, free expression and all manner of sounds from around the world.

You’ll be able to find recordings of the shows here on Spotify, shows available so far include:

Austra On Air
You wanna listen to some real dance music? Tune into AUSTRA’s radio show on Domino Radio! They’ll make you move it with some sexy throwbacks, a few big hits, and one or two surprises that will leave you shaking. Also be sure to check out AUSTRA in your home town this summer on their UK/Europe tour – they’re ready to pound out some serious tunes off their newly released “Feel It Break” album.

Milo Merok On Air
i went into this radio show very under prepared, but over the course of the show began to find my true radio voice! jack shankly, domino artist and repertoire man and friend, lent his helping hand to steady me on the way, half way through the show i began to get to realize a vision for the show: we would take on jon kennedy for the late london audience, exposure part 2, roughly around 2am mark. . .apparently no one else wants this spot. apparently breakfast time is the prime spot, if i had a breakfast show it would be called ‘burnt toast’, but i don’t. i do have a one off radio show that will hopefully be played after midnight on a weekday. i’m gonna call it the nightbus. hope you enjoy it.

Smith Westerns On Air
Smith Westerns stopped by to say an early wassup to Domino Radio in April, in between dates on their UK tour with the Vaccines. The Chicago dreamboats dropped a blockbusting mix of drive-time radio hits befitting the full time road-dawgs they are right now as they peddle the romantic wares of their dreamy “Dye It Blonde” LP (out now on Weird World / Domino in Europe) the world over.

Check out the full schedule of artists, DJs and hosts.
